Summer Camp Counselor

Hours: Monday through Thursday, Up to 20 hours a week over the course of 6 weeks
Pay: $12.50 to $15 per hour (Pay based on organizational budget)
Benefits: No benefits
Location: On-Site; Work will primarily take place at The Healing Hub (Eastside, Detroit, MI). with some meetings at Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance (Westside, Detroit, MI.)

About Us
Detroit Heals Detroit exists to foster healing justice for Detroit youth in which they are able to transform their pain into power. With a goal to combat trauma, we use healing centered engagement to share our greatest vulnerabilities with the rest of the world while simultaneously working to dismantle oppressive systems for marginalized Detroit youth.
Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance is a community-based development organization (CBDO), and as such, has incredible reach into the community. CRCAA has experienced tremendous success in engaging youth through immersive programming, stabilizing the neighborhoods, and engaging the community through convenings and activation of community efforts. CRCAA functions as a neighborhood convener and facilitator, encouraging residents, youth, families, business owners, and churches to come together to solve problems. Grow Detroit's Young Talent (GDYT) is a citywide summer jobs program that trains and employs young adults between the ages of 14 and 24 for up to 120 hours. Youth participants must be permanent residents of the City of Detroit and be eligible to work in the United States. There are a broad range of jobs available to the participants. Examples of jobs include: community cleanups, event planning, accounting, retail and the Junior Police or Fire Cadets to name a few. Last year, over 8,000 local youth received employment, which is our goal again this year. Learn more about our partner here.
Position Overview
As a Counselor, you will support the Black Joy Summer Camp by delivering an enriching and engaging summer camp experience to local youth. Counselors will gain professional skills such as leadership experience while actively contributing to the camp's daily operations, working directly with children, and supporting camp programming.
Skills and Experience
- Must be between 17 and 24 years old.
Interest in working with youth, community development, or education.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work in a team and collaborate with others.
Enthusiastic, dependable, and open to learning new skills.
No prior experience required, though experience with youth programs is a plus.
Key Responsibilities
- Camp Assistance: Support camp activities such as arts and crafts, games, outdoor recreation, educational programs, and team-building exercises.
- Peer to Peer Mentorship: Serve as a positive role model, helping to guide and mentor younger campers in their personal and social development.
- Teamwork & Collaboration: Work closely with other camp staff, helping with program preparation, assisting with logistics, and ensuring activities run smoothly.
Communication: Interact with campers, parents, and fellow team members in a professional and respectful manner.
Professional Development: Participate in GDYT's job readiness training, career exploration sessions, and attend weekly check-ins to discuss progress and receive feedback.
