BOARD MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend bi-weekly meetings: Board members should attend meetings regularly, where they can discuss and make decisions on important topics.
  • Setting goals: Board members work with the board to set goals and objectives, and ensure that they are met.
  • Oversight: Board members work with management to ensure that the organization is meeting its goals and operating ethically.
  • Advocacy: Board members publicly advocate for the organization to maintain a positive standing in the community.
  • Fundraising: Board members may make connections with potential donors, maintain relationships with current donors, and arrange partnerships with businesses.
  • Evaluating the executive director: Board members evaluate the executive director to ensure they are meeting their goals, and provide feedback on their strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Legal and ethical obligations: Board members have legal duties to act diligently, with loyalty to the organization, and comply with all legal and ethical obligations.
  • Shaping the organization: Board members contribute to the organization's culture and vision, and improve its strategic focus and effectiveness.
  • Appointing committee members: Board members appoint people to committees and assign committee chairs.
  • Hiring and compensating leadership: Board members hire and set compensation for executive leadership.
  • Adopting policies: Board members adopt policies to address conflicts of interest.

OPEN BOARD POSITIONS

Co-Chair

  • Attend and lead all board  meetings

  • Alternate acting as meeting chairpersons with other Co-Chair

  • Maintain an approachable and helpful disposition and lead by example

  • Promote and demonstrate respectful communication and collaboration in the organization, especially when it comes to resolving conflict & org issues.

  • Represent the organization with fidelity in the community

  • Maintain positive relationships with everyone in the organization. Verbally checking in with individuals every 6 weeks.

  • Stand in the gap and perform roles of other board members in their absence


Secretary

  • Prepare board meeting agendas, which must include the meeting name, place and time, and distribute the agenda to other committee members at least three days in advance

  • Post the meeting agenda in advance of the meeting

  • Prepare meeting minutes, including listing those in attendance and recording the date an issue was originally raised

  • Distribute the minutes to the rest of the organization & keep a copy on file for two years.

  • Ensure meeting topics and discussions remain focused and tailor us back into focus when we lose focus

  • Help us stay grounded in our mission, vision and values as an organization

  • Communicate effectively with rest of organization

  • Attend all board meetings


Treasurer

  • Oversee and approve all financial budgets or revisions to budgets

  • Ensure we have a financial budget for all events & projects and keep us updated on them

  • Plan and ensure adherence to all pre-determined financial budgets

  • Ensure the protection of funds from any potential misuse by any other members of the organization

  • Give update on budgets at every organizational/board meeting

  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and its presentation to the board for review

  • Ensure we have W9s, invoices and receipts for everything!

  • Keep track of payments and ensure everyone gets paid in a timely manner

  • Attend monthly meetings with accountant and ED

  • Help us reduce organizational expenses and make sound financial decisions

  • Attend all board meetings


Youth & Community Engagement Chair

  • Establish positive relationships with community

  • Engage with other youth to bring them into the movement

  • Develop effective coalitions and partnerships

  • Develop surveys to evaluate programs and event

  • Develop Organization Calendar and keep it updated

  • Monitor and evaluate community organizing program, practices, and initiatives to ensure quality and effectiveness; make recommendations for improvement.

  • Train all new members in organizing, including outreach; implementing campaigns; and carrying out actions (the training materials will be provided for you)
